Surry Hills Removals
Inner-city Sydney removalists

The move is a parking plan, not a big truck.

Surry Hills, Darlinghurst, Redfern and the inner city are no-driveway, permit-only, single-lane streets. We sort the kerb, the lane and the City of Sydney permit before the truck turns up, so move day actually runs.

Why an inner-city move is different

Three things decide a Surry Hills move

None of them is the size of the truck. They are all about access, which is exactly what a local crew plans around.

No driveway, no setback

The terrace front door opens straight onto the footpath. There is nowhere off-street to stage a truck, so the legal kerb spot is the whole job, and we sort it before move day, not on it.

A permit-only kerb

Almost half the homes here own no car and the streets are resident-permit and metered. A City of Sydney visitor permit is the lawful way to hold the kerb for the truck, and it takes about five working days to get.

Single-width back lanes

The 19th-century rear lanes behind the terraces are tight, twisting and often one-way. A full-size pantechnicon will not fit, so we bring the right-size truck and shuttle the last leg when we have to.

The Surry Hills tool

Find your loading plan before you book

Tell the parking finder your street type, your home and the back-lane access. It maps the realistic option, where the truck legally sits, whether you need a visitor permit, and whether a small truck and a shuttle beat a pantechnicon, then hands you a printable move-day sheet.

How a Surry Hills move runs

Planned, so nothing improvises on the day

  1. STEP 01

    You send the address

Your pickup and drop-off and a rough idea of what is moving. A photo of the stairs or the front helps us read it instantly.

  2. STEP 02

    We plan the kerb

We scout a legal loading spot, work out the lane, the stairs and the lift, and tell you if a visitor permit is needed and how many.

  3. STEP 03

    Permit + window locked

You sort the visitor permit the week before (we walk you through it); we book the building lift or dock where there is one.

  4. STEP 04

    Move day runs to plan

The crew wraps, carries and loads in the held window, no circling the block, no surprise fines, no improvising on the day.

The permit most people get wrong

For a house move you want a visitor permit

The City of Sydney runs two very different parking schemes. Knowing which one applies is half the battle, so here is the honest version.

✓ Use this, visitor parking permit

The lawful way to hold the kerb

  • Removal trucks are eligible, the City states a removalist truck (under 4.5t) can use a visitor permit.
  • $23 for a book of 10 single-use permits ($11 with a pensioner concession); up to 50 a household per year.
  • Single-use, scratch-off, you scratch the date and display it on the truck for the day.
  • Apply online with two address documents; allow about 5 working days to process.

✗ Not this, works zone

The construction tool, wrong for a move

  • A works zone is for construction vehicles, not a one-day house move.
  • Needs 6 to 8 weeks lead time, not the week you actually have.
  • Carries a 26-week minimum kerbside commitment and a security deposit.
  • The wrong fit and the wrong cost for moving home, so we never point you at it.

We sort the visitor permit plan with you as part of the quote.

Common questions

Good to know before you move

Do I really need a parking permit to move in Surry Hills?

On most inner-city streets, yes. There is no driveway and the kerb is resident-permit or metered, so a City of Sydney visitor permit is the lawful way to hold a legal loading spot for a removal truck under 4.5 tonnes. We tell you exactly how many you need and how to apply; allow about five working days.

My terrace has steep, narrow stairs and a tight hallway. Can you do it?

Yes, that is the everyday Surry Hills job. We measure big pieces against the staircase turn, dismantle what will not come down whole, and bring the crew, trolleys and stair protection. Send a photo of the stairs with your enquiry for an accurate read.

What if the truck cannot fit down my back lane?

Then we do not force it. We bring a smaller truck or van for the tight lanes and shuttle to a larger vehicle staged on a legal spot nearby. Working out that approach in advance is exactly what stops a move running over.

How far ahead should I book?

The earlier the better, especially around month-end and weekends. A week or two secures your date and leaves time for the visitor permit to process. We will still try to fit in a short-notice move, so ask.

How much will my move cost?

Our online-quote rates start at $200/hour for two movers and a truck ($250 for three, $400 for a larger crew with two trucks). You get a clear indicative quote up front for your specific move, with no surprises on the day.
